How do we know that marine dinosaurs did not have gills?

For instance, with the Loch Ness monster everyone always assumes it draws air. How come we know that both Nessie and marine dinosaurs don't have gills?

  1. may be they are just like whales or marine mammals...where their skeletal structures shows the rib cage for lungs....so since they have lungs so they behave more like reptiles...example..crocodiles or some amphibians...where they surface occasionally to take in air...
  2. Neat idea! I think it may have something to do with how water is used though, to power the creatures through the water, after a certain weight and pressure would that idea of gills still work? Biggest creature the Blue Whale and it's kind have blow holes and draw air. So wouldn't it be the same with huge dinosaurs?
